Inside the Torri Sopu 30.06.05: Project Works by the Nadur Local Council

Work on San Blas road, the longest road in Nadur with 1.5km, is finished with all the road in tarmac.

At Ta' Kenuna Garden work on the pathways continued while the tower floor was resurfaced with stone slabs. All this work is being sponsored by Maltacom plc, following a request by the Local Council. Other works to be done are a public toilet, railings and grid irons.

Restoration works on Ta' Sopu Tower continued on the outside, while the interior has all been finished.  The Tower will be inaugurated later on this summer with a special programme to be announced later.

A new public convenience, accessible for all, has been opened at North Street. There are three public conveniences which are now open everyday: at Dahlet Qorrot, Gnien il-Kunsill and North Steet.

A new garden in turf at Ghajn Qasab Street was inaugurated with the Carnival Sculpture, work by Gozitan artist John Grima, on Saturday 4th June 2005 before the closing ceremony of the 25th FECC Convention

A meeting with the Director of Customer Services was held about the work to start on the government clinic in St Peter and St Paul Square, whereby this will be modernised and transferred to the ground floor. Work is to be carried out during the summer.

Delicata Classic Wine Festival 200530.06.05: THIRD EDITION OF NADUR WINE FESTIVAL

The Third Edition of Nadur Wine Festival organised by Delicata in collaboration with the Nadur Local Council will be held over 3 days on the 19, 20 and 21 August 2005 at Gnien il-Kunsill from 7.30 p.m. till midnight everyday. Entrance is free, although visitors wishing to taste the vast range of free wines on show will need to purchase an official Festival glass, which will be theirs to keep as a souvenir.

Agricultural Show Saturday18thJune200518-9.06.05: Agricultural Show at Dun Martin Camilleri Square

The Mnarja 2005 festivities have  started on  Saturday evening at Dun Martin Camilleri Square, attracting over 200 participants with their fruits animals and other exhibits. This year's giant pumpkin reached only the 90kg mark, far from last year's 256kg. According to Nenu Muscat this was the result of unfavourable weather conditions. Click here for photos.

21.05.05: Press Release about the 25 FECC Convention.

A press release was held at Cafe Regina in Valletta. Dr. Chris Said, Mayor of Nadur, addressed the journalists with details about the coming Convention to be organised by the Nadur Local Council between the 28th May and 5th June 2005.  Present were also Dr Paul Borg Olivier Mayor of Valletta, Mr. Joseph Borda, Mr Joseph J. Mifsud and the Hon , Dr Francis Zammit Dimech, Minister for Tourism and Culture.

It was also announced that the Valletta and the Nadur Council are going to sign an agreement of co-operation between the 2 localities to further their cultural manifestations.

Nadur centre - main square4.05.05: New Traffic rules for Nadur starting on Monday

 As from Monday 9th May 2005, new traffic rules are to be applied at Nadur. These are: a 35km speed limit for all Nadur with the use of roving speed cameras. Racecourse Street will remain open before and after school hours with a speed limit of 15km in front of the school, while F.S. Sciortino will be closed for traffic from 8:00 till 8:30am and from 2:15 till 2:45pm. Entrance and exit for school children will be from F.S. Sciortino street.

3.05.05: A Public debate at the council

 On Monday 2nd May 2005, a well-attended public debate was held at the Local Council at 8:00pm. Mayor Chris Said addressed those present about: plans for the stone quarry landfill site in il-Qortin, works at San Blas road, the application by Gozo AFM to erect a communication tower at its base, the embellishment of San Blas beach and the access to it.

Torri Sopu and il-Qortin28.04.05: Mepa approves Nadur quarry extension

 The Malta Environment and Planning Authority yesterday sanctioned an extension to a hard stone quarry in il-Qortin Street, Nadur and approved the utilisation of the disused quarry as an inert landfill site.

The quarry is in a remote rural area, on a plateau overlooking San Blas, about 175 metres southwest of the 17th century Isopu coastal watch tower.

To the west, the site adjoins the Gozo AFM base and to the south Wied ir-Rahhan. The quarry has been active since 1976 and its depth ranges between 16 and 30 metres.The permit was granted against a number of conditions including a planning gain contribution of Lm10,000 to be used for urban development in the locality and another Lm20,000 to go towards the restoration of the quarry. Dr Chris Said confirmed as Mayor of Nadur1.04.05: 1st Meeting of the 5th Nadur Local Council

 On Tuesday 29th March 2005, the 5th Nadur Local Council was sworn in and today Friday, 1st April 2005, the  first meeting was held at 3:00pm. Dr Chris Said was confirmed as Mayor with Miriam Portelli as Vice-Mayor. The 3 year programme for the new Council was presented by the Mayor.

Nadur Local Council emblem25.03.05: Last Council meeting for the 4th Nadur Local Council.

 On Monday 28th March 2005, there will be the last meeting for the 4th Nadur Local Council, while on Friday 1st April at 7:00pm the newly elected 5th Local Council is holding its first meeting. Following changes in the election laws, on the first meeting, the Mayor and Vice-Mayor will be confirmed according to the results of the election, which goes to the party getting the majority of councillors. Dr Chris Said will be the Mayor, with Miriam Portelli as vice-Mayor. The new Mayor will be announcing the 3 year programme for the new Council.

New Local Council premises as on 21/03/0517.03.05: Ground floor of New Premises nearing completion.

 Work on the ground floor of the new premises in North Street is nearing completion. In fact, it is planned that the public convenience will be opened in May, in time for the 25th FECC International Convention to be held in Nadur from the 27th May to the 5th June 2005.

James Edward - Tenor17.03.05: Easter Concert in aid of Tsunami Victims

 The  Nadur Local Council in collaboration with Chorus Urbanus and Stardom Promotions Agency is presenting an INTERNATIONAL CELEBRITY CONCERT at the MBC Theatre, Nadur on Sunday 27th April at 4.00pm. Entrance is free. Tickets may be obtained from the Local Council. Donations will be collected during the Concert in aid of Tsunami victims. Click here for programme.

16.03.05: Results of the Nadur Local Council Election

 The newly elected Nadur Local Council following Saturdays election will be made up of: Dr. Chris Said (PN), Ms Miriam Portelli (PN), Mr Andrew Muscat (PN), Mrs Maria Natoli (MLP) and Mr Jonathan Buttigieg (MLP). From 3453 eligible voters, 2737 cast their vote, out of which 147 turned out to be invalid. The established quota was 432 votes. 3 councillors were elected for the first time, while Alternattiva Demokratika claimed 70 votes. Click here for a detailed report.

8.03.05: Other Roads Resurfaced

 5 other roads have been resurfaced in tarmac after structural work on all the services was carried out beforehand. These are: Triq l-Imnarja, Triq ix-Xaghri, Triq l-Isqof Buttigieg, Triq Agius de Soldanis and Triq Guze Bonnici. Click here for photos.

Training ground at Imgarr Road7.03.05: Agreement with Nadur Youngsters FC.

The Local Council has signed an agreement with the Nadur Youngsters Football Club for the resurfacing of the training football ground at Mgarr Road with artificial turf. The project is planned to be finished by the end of April 2005.

Construction work at Ta' Sopu Tower has been finished this week. Today, the tower was opened for the public to visit and enjoy the beautiful panorama surrounding this historic place. Artificial Turf at the MUSEUM ground28.02.05: 5 a-side Football Tournament for Tsunami Victims

 It was a special inauguration of the artificial turf pitch at the MUSEUM premises with a 5 a-side football tournament organised to raise funds for the Tsunami victims. 24 teams took part with games starting at 9.30am and lasting at about 9.30pm despite the inclement weather later in the day.

 The Nadur Local Council has just published the 17th issue of its info-magazine Hidmietnaf'Isimkom with a special full colour edition which gives an overview of all the projects which were carried out by the 4th Local Council since it was elected 3 years ago. With messages from the five councilors about their commitments in this Council, and articles about the various finished projects and cultural activities which has now become part of the yearly Calendar of events at Nadur, the publication is well designed with photos and printed on a special paper.

Mnarja Band Club float16.02.05: The Nadur Carnival 2005 Presentations 

 On Thursday 24th February 2005 at 7.00pm, a meeting for all the participants in the Organised Nadur Carnival will be held at Dr. Joseph Debono Hall of Nadur Primary school. Highlights of Sunday Carnival will be screened together with the presentation of awards as announced in the published results. Details about the May/June carnival will also be given for all those interested to participate. This is an open invitation to all.

Artist 12.02.05: Art Exhibition for the 25th FECC Convention

 The Nadur Local Council is inviting artists to exhibit their works at an art exhibition to be held for the 25th FECC International Convention from the 28th May to 5th June 2005.  The ground at the MUSEUM Boys' premises has been resurfaced with artificial turf in one of the projects by the Local Council aimed to support the organisation to work with children. 

The Winning Float by Qala Road Bums9.02.05: Nadur Carnival Results

 The official results for the 11th edition of the Organised Sunday Carnival were published today with the San Blas Group winning the overall contest with 95.8 points. The Qala Road Bums' float "Minn Fejn L-Ocean Ifur Ghall-Karnival tan-Nadur" won the floats competition. Click here for all the results.

King Carnival 20057.02.05: 11th Edition of Nadur Carnival

 The 11th edition of the Organised Nadur Carnival took place on Sunday 6th February at the St Peter and St Paul Square in a 5 hours programme with 50 items from floats, dancing & costume competitions in 11 categories. Highlights of this programme will be screened on Net-TV on Tuesday 8th February at 9.30 pm.

 In a sunny afternoon, the Primary school children and their parents enjoyed a spectacular 'The Disney Show' which was preceded by 3 dances by the Nadur children as directed by Gemma Xuereb and Monica Grima.  Nadur Carnival celebrations 2005 started with a bang! On Thursday 3rd February, Nadur main square was the venue of 'Exodus' - The Tent Party that saw hundreds of party revelers enjoying their first Carnival evening under a big tent. DJ's Jay Cee, Malcom B and Alfie Fabri entertained the crowd. This event was sponsored by Heineken.

Frances Galea crowned as Nadur Queen Carnival30.01.05: Frances Galea crowned Nadur Carnival Queen 2005

In a packed hall at the MBC Theatre, Frances Galea was crowned as Nadur Carnival Queen from among 11 local contestants, while Lana Xuereb won the title of Maltese Carnival Queen 2005 from the 14 Maltese contestants, with Chantelle Grech winning the National Carnival Queen 2005 from amongst all. Spiro Sillato, the Young Talent Team and Fabrizio Faniello were the main guests for the show. Click here for photos.

Nadur main square25.01.05: Works by the Nadur Local Council

The Local Council has these projects under construction:

The resurfacing by Road Construction has just started on Bishop Buttigieg Street, Agius DeSoldanis Street and Guze Bonnici Street. The ground at the boys' MUSEUM branch with be laid with artificial turf by next week. Sunday 30th January will be an Open Day at Ta' Sopu Tower from 9.00am to 4.00pm for the public, while restoration works are still being carried out. While the building of the first floor of the new premises in North street is almost finished, works on Andar Street  were concluded this week

Police on the Watch..20.01.05: Police directives for Nadur Carnival

The Local Council had a formal meeting with the police officials to discuss safety procedures for the Nadur Carnival activities. The police announced their plans for the spontaneous Carnival as from Friday 4th to Tuesday 8th February  about the traffic starting at 7.00pm till 12.00am:

* Racecourse Str, St John Str and Xandriku Str will be "One-way".  

* While for Saturday 5th February, old and bulky vehicles will not be allowed to access December 13th Str except for hand driven floats.

The general public is kindly asked to observe these regulations for a successful Carnival celebration 2005.

The first-ever Miss Nadur Carnival and Miss Queen Carnival beauty contests is going to be held at the MBC theatre on Saturday 29th January by the Nadur Local Council in collaboration with Catwalk Productions.

Building of the New Local Council Premises in North Street13.01.05: Building of the new Local Council Premises

Building of the new Local Council premises has already started at North Street and the first part is projected to be finished by June. This premises is planned to include administration offices, Internet Centre, an information desk about Nadur for residents and tourists, a meeting hall and public convenience.

The Nadur Local Council has just published the 16th issue of its info-magazine Hidmietnaf'Isimkom. This month's issue gives an overview of all the recent activities organised by the Local Council for Christmas, all the projects that are under construction and the new projects to start soon. One finds details about the work on Sopu Tower and the open day scheduled for the 30th January 2005, the Nadur Carnival 2005 programme and an important decision about a new system for the use of skips at Ta' Xurdin which will be restricted as from 15th January. read more

The Disney Show5.01.05: "The Disney Show" for Children's Carnival

"The Disney Show" is a  spectacular for all the family on Children's Carnival on Friday 4th, 2005. It is an experience where the best loved Disney characters come to life through a conglomeration of dance, song, colour, music and magic. Excerpts from Disney Classic such as "The Hunchback of Notre Dame", "Aladdin" and "Pocahontas" are brought to life through vivid choreography performed by a troupe of excellent dancers. Each excerpt is linked and further enhanced with magic and illusions performed by "Jafar" (the Scorcer from Aladdin) himself, who entrains and helps the audience participate constantly in the show and in his illusions, and rewards the audience with several give away prizes. Ta' Sopu tower 3.01.05: Work  on Ta' Sopu Tower

Plastering of Ta' Sopu Tower has just started after construction work finished. The Nadur Council is planning an Open Day this month, for the public to see what has been done.

  • The Council has approved a motion for work to start on Andar Street which will be surfaced with concrete instead of tarmac because it is too narrow.

Political Satire in Nadur Carnival3.01.05: Official Programme for Nadur Carnival 2005

The Nadur Local Council has officially published the programme for Carnival 2005 starting on the 29th January with Miss Queen Carnival and Miss Nadur Carnival followed by a Carnival Tent Party on Thursday 3rd February at St Peter & St Paul Square. The Children Carnival will be held on Friday 4th at the Nadur Primary School grounds, while the Organised Carnival is set for Sunday 6th. Carnival ends on on Tuesday 8th February,2005. Read more
